Here is some information to assist you throughout the year. Parents are always welcome in my class. Throughout the year, I will ask for volunteers so please make sure you have your Criminal Record and Child Welfare checks completed and in the office. Your help and support through the year will help make success, field trips, and special activities possible!
This year, there will be a paper agenda. The agenda will be filled out EVERY day and please check the HOMEWORK page on this site DAILY.

Language Arts
We start the year with
Reading - stems from the Scholastic Literacy Place Book Clubs program, with levelled novel and book studies for small group instruction, and we will be infusing the Super Six Comprehension Strategies. Our work on writing skills will be based on the program called 6+1 Trait Writing and on a program for story writing created by Joanne Moore.
Social Studies
The foundation in our Social Program is based on the pillars of democracy. Other topics include studying Ancient Athens, the Iroquois Confederacy and our local and provincial systems. Field trips to the St. Albert City Council Chambers and to the Alberta Legislature are possibilities.
Religion
The focus of our religion program is the Christian moral life. The name of our text is You Shall Be My Witnesses. Our symbol of the year is the lantern, symbolizing how our actions reflect God is light and benefit others.
Confirmation
Our religion program makes many references to this sacrament and we will discuss the sacrament and preparation often in class. All sacraments are a family and parish responsibility that Catholic schools support. Registration at St. Albert Parish for Confirmation is on September 28th at 6:30 p.m..
Health
We are participating in DARE, the Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education Program offered by the RCMP. The DARE program lasts for ten weeks.
Evaluation - Written tests, quizzes, and projects are all a part of the evaluation process.
Provincial Achievement Tests
Students will write provincial achievement exams at the end of the year.
Please note the dates when planning family activities.
Classroom Procedures
Binder System
Each student maintains two binders--- a daily working binder and a storage binder. The working binder contains the unit material in all the subjects that we are currently studying, and should travel between home and school everyday. The storage binder remains at school and is for storing completed units and materials which will be needed for review when we prepare for the achievement tests at the end of the year.
Homework
The amount of homework your child receives varies from child to child. Homework is usually finishing up work that was begun in class after the instructional portion of the lesson. Students should be reviewing notes and new material as it is being covered in class. This will help put the material into long-term memory.
